Can be easily reached from Palermo, where is only 20km, along the fast road Palermo
- Sciacca.
The village is located 740 meters above sea level and has 6400 inhabitants.
Piana degli Albanesi was founded by a group of Albanian refugees who in 1488
signed with the ecclesiastical authorities of the Archbishop of Monreale Mensa
chapters of the Foundation (30 August 1488).
Until 1819 the public positions were reserved for only students of the
Byzantine rite - greek. This event together with the subsequent founding of St.
dell'Oratorio Filippo Blacks, the College of Mary and the Seminary greek -
Albanian Palermo, have favored the retention of its original connotation ethnic
- linguistic and religious identity.
The Arberesh Piana had an active role in the Risorgimento, the movement of
political and trade union Fasci Siciliani (1893-1894), under the guidance of
Nicola Barbato, and in the movement for the occupation of land in the 50s of
last century . Piana is unfortunately known for being the site of the massacre
of Portella della Ginestra (1 May 1947). Pianioti some of the most
famous were: Luca Matranga, p. Giorgio Guzzetta, Demetrio Camarda, Giuseppe
Schirò, Nicola Barbato. Of great artistic value, the
presence of many frescoes by Pietro Novelli.
The activities are directed towards prevailing agriculture, pastoralism, the
crafts and tourism.
Typical products are: bread, ricotta cheese, olive oil, meat, and not least the
famous cannoli.
